About Above Board Marine
Our Story
MaryAnn and Scott started Above Board Marine in 2016, and we're still here running things every day. Before moving to Florida, Scott spent years as a contractor in Massachusetts, where he learned that good work isn't about shortcuts—it's about doing things right, even when no one's watching.
We're a family business based in Englewood, and we work all over the area—Port Charlotte, Boca Grande, and throughout Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota Counties. Over the years, we've built more than 200 boat lifts and thousand custom docks, which means we've driven tens of thousands of pilings into these waterways. Most of our growth has come from referrals, which tell you something. When people trust you with their property, and then they send their friends and family your way, you must be doing something right.
What Sets Us Apart
When choosing a marine contractor, licenses and experience matter. At Above Board Marine, Scott holds both a General Contractor license and a Marine Contractor license, and James also holds a General Contractor license. This means every project is evaluated and overseen by licensed professionals with years of hands-on field experience—not salespeople or unlicensed supervisors.
Many companies in our area operate without proper licensing or rely on minimally supervised crews. We don’t work that way. Before any job begins, it is reviewed by someone who understands the engineering, permitting requirements, and construction methods necessary to build structures that last in Florida’s demanding marine environment.
Our experience spans residential waterfront properties, commercial marinas, and government projects. We've worked with homeowners, businesses, and municipal clients
— each with different requirements and standards. That breadth of experience means we know how to handle complex projects, navigate different permitting processes, and deliver work that meets professional standards regardless of the scope.
When you hire Above Board Marine, you're getting a team led by multiple licensed contractors who have skin in the game. We're not just another dock company—we're qualified professionals who take responsibility for every aspect of your project from start to finish.
Why Work With Us
We Answer the Phone When you call Above Board Marine, you talk to MaryAnn and our team. Not a call center, not an answering service. Real people who know your project and can actually answer your questions.
We Handle Everything Permitting, engineering, scheduling, inspections—we take care of it all. You shouldn't have to chase down contractors or wonder what's happening. We keep you informed and handle headaches, so you don't have to.
We Know These Waters After 16 years and hundreds of projects in this area, we understand local conditions, permitting requirements, and what works in Southwest Florida. That experience matters when you're building something that must withstand hurricanes and saltwater.
Part of This Community
Living here, we've all been through hurricane seasons. We've helped many families and businesses rebuild their docks and boat lifts after major storms. It's tough work and often urgent, but it's part of being in this community. When your neighbors need help getting back on the water, you show up and do the work.
Our Vision
We're working to be Southwest Florida's most trusted marine construction company, the one known for quality work, honest dealings, and real expertise. We want to build structures that families enjoy for generations, and we want to be here to support them long after the project is finished.
That's what drives us: doing work that lasts and treating people right along the way.
Our Team & How We've Grown
The business has grown steadily, and we've brought in partners and expanded our capabilities. We now run three barges with experienced crews who've been doing this work for years. But here's what hasn't changed: MaryAnn and Scott are still involved in business day by day. That makes a real difference. When you call, you're talking to people who own this company and care about your project personally.
James Holm is our Project Manager with over 14 years of marine construction experience. He is involved in every project we take on and brings deep, hands-on knowledge of the marine construction industry.
James also leads our new Seawall Division, applying proven expertise to one of the most critical elements of waterfront property—shoreline protection. A seawall built incorrectly can lead to costly failures and repairs down the road. James ensures every seawall is designed and constructed right the first time, protecting your investment for years to come.
Above Board Marine is fully equipped to handle residential, commercial, and government projects, delivering reliable, high-quality marine construction solutions across all sectors.
